Ayurveda is an ancient system of medicine developed in Sri Lanka and the Indian subcontinent. The meaning of Ayurveda is “Knowledge of Life” – from Sanskrit words “Ayuh” (life) and “Veda”.

Ayurveda is followed by millions of people in Sri Lanka and across the globe as a holistic approach to health and well-being. Ayurvedic doctors regard physical existence, mental existence, and personality as a unit, with each element being able to influence the others. This holistic approach is used during diagnosis and therapy, and is a fundamental aspect of Ayurveda in Sri Lanka.

The ayurvedic system comprises three types of energies or Dosha within the body: Vatha (a combination of air and space), Pitha (fire and water) and Kappha (earth and water). According to Ayurvedic principles illness arises when these Dosha are out of balance. The aim is to restore the harmony in the body. Comprehensive treatment therefore focus on oil treatments, massage, herbal baths and ayurvedic diet.

Ayurveda in Sri Lanka is a way of life known to generations for over 3000 years.

Snorkeling in Kalpitiya

The reef in Talawila is one of the best places to go on snorkeling in Kalpitiya. From December to March, when the sea is calm in the mornings, it is the ideal time to head out to Talawila reef for some nice early morning snorkeling. Best time to snorkel is even before breakfast. A wonderful way to start your day. However because of the rising ocean temperatures and global warming, a lot of corals died in late 2016. They are about to recover but it takes time for the reef to gain back its full beauty. It will however be an amazing experience to walk to Talawila early morning, enjoy a beautiful sunrise, go on snorkeling and come back to Elements for a hearty breakfast, prepared with locally sourced ingredients by our lovely staff. At Talawila, you can also make a quick trip to the famous St. Anne’s Church.
